The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens Presents the 20th Annual Garden Week

February 23, 2010

Jacksonville, Fla. – The Cummer Council of the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens will host the 20th annual Garden Week beginning Monday, March 15 through Wednesday, March 17, 2010. During Garden Week, The Cummer will celebrate the designation of The Cummer Gardens listing in the National Register of Historic Places by featuring guest lectures, luncheons, master gardener tours, a fashion show featuring local retailers Sharon Batten and Model Citizen, garden items from The Cummer Store, unique jewelry designs by Lillian Ostergard and baked goods from Mrs. Cummer’s Tea Table. The funds raised from this event will go toward the restoration of the Olmsted Garden that is located along the banks of the St. Johns River behind the museum.

Garden Week helps bring attention to the gardens that Arthur and Ninah Cummer created when she built her home,” said Robin Albaneze, Cummer Council President.By having this event, I hope that the community realizes what a treasure we have here in Jacksonville.”

This year's theme focuses on natural and organic. Monday’s speaker is renowned author and visionary garden designer Renny Reynolds. He will speak on “Listening to The Land” and showcase his property, Hortolus Farm, which is located in New Hope, Pennsylvania, an exquisite 100-acre property that has been restored and developed for the public’s enjoyment. The lecture and luncheon begin at 11 a.m. and costs $60 per person.

Tuesday’s speaker is author Jack Staub, who has written several books on developing organic herb and vegetable gardens. He will give a presentation on "Sowing Goodness." This lecture pays tribute to the virtues of growing what you eat, not only for the good of body and soul, but for the good of the planet and our local farm economies as well. The lecture and luncheon begin at 11 a.m. and costs $25 per person.

Join us Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. as we celebrate the fruits of the Earth for Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Wine, a wine tasting highlighting three vineyards as well as appetizers from local growers and farmers. The event is sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida and the Up & Cummers, The Cummer’s young professional affinity group. Tuesday’s Wine Tasting costs $60 per person.

Wednesday is Spring Fashion Day as we host a luncheon and fashion show featuring the latest in spring styles from two of our local fashion boutiques, Sharon Batten and Model Citizen. The luncheon and fashion show begin at noon and costs $50 per person.

In addition to Garden Week, The Cummer is hosting a FamilyArt and Garden Experience on Tuesday, March 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Everyone is invited to come out and try their hand at art projects and enjoy garden tours.

Garden Week 2010 is sponsored by flower Magazine, Publix Super Markets Charities and Sight and Sound Productions.
