The Art of War

Friday, Oct 1, 2010 through Sunday, Nov 14, 2010

During World War II, a number of governement agencies issued posters for display in public places, including schools, libraries, post offices and factories. These posters used art and graphic design to inspire the American war effort. Some posters addressed the conservation of materials through rationing; others promoted the purchase of war bonds. A number of posters advocated for women in the workplace. Regardless of subject matter, these images helped unite the American people during a critical time in our nation's history.

Jacksonville resident Major General Gerry Maloney USAF (Ret.), a 31-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, began collecting these posters as a 10-year-old boy. From 1941 until 1945, he collected more than 250 posters, issued by various government agencies.
